Guide to Mixing Metals

There are so many decisions to make in a remodel, and we love to share our tips and tricks anytime we can! We’re asked all the time about the best ways to mix and match different metals in one space. We mix metals between plumbing, light fixtures, and hardware often in our designs, but we have some tips to make it easy and straightforward for everyone. This week, we’re sharing DGI’s guide for mixing metals.

In this bathroom, we mixed chrome hardware and brass plumbing fixtures. You can achieve a clean look with mixed metals as long as you follow a few guidelines. So let’s discuss our best tips for mixing metals!

TIP #1: DON’T FEAR “TRENDS”

The best way to think about metal finishes in your home is to think about it like jewelry. The different finishes and options are definitely here to stay. So you should choose the finish you like best, but if you can’t - mix them! Brass will add warmth, chrome will add a modern look, and nickel is the warmest of the “silvery” metals.

In this bathroom, we mixed brass hardware and mirrors with nickel plumbing and light fixtures. They make a beautiful pair, and add so much warmth!

TIP #2 : DON’T OVERDO IT

We typically recommend sticking to two metals, max in a room. Matte black is like the neutral of metals, it can go with anything and always adds a modern touch when mixed with other metals.

Modern black metal floating shelves balance out the polished nickel in this kitchen and add some contrast. They also tie in nicely with the black range and the black pots and pans hanging above (because yes, we obviously curated the pots and pans to match the design as well)

TIP #3: APPLY RULES TO THE ROOM

When mixing metals, it’s important to apply rules and stick to them. For example, keep all the plumbing fixtures the same metal, all the lights the same, and all the accessories/hardware the same. You can mix and match between categories, but be consistent with the categories.

In this bathroom, we primarily used a satin brass to add warmth, but chose polished nickel for the light fixtures to soften the design and keep it from getting overwhelmed with brass.

TIP #4: CARRY IT INTO THE DECOR

Metal doesn’t have to only be in the architectural details, you can carry it into the decor to make it even more cohesive.

We carried in the black metal from the light fixtures into the design even further with a black metal rimmed tray and tumbler by the sinks here, in addition to black candles and a black wood bathtub tray.

We hope these tips are helpful and encourage you to mix more metals in your own home!
