SERENITY HEIGHTS
Located high above the bustling city streets in the prestigious St. Regis Residences in Chicago, this pied-a-terre offers a serene escape for our clients to retire to after spending time in the city. Beginning as a truly empty shell, DGI was brought in to make this space feel like a home away from home.
The entryway immediately informs the elevated elegance of the entire apartment. A moody mushroom brown evokes down-to-earth tranquility and a subtle sophistication when paired with graphic wallpaper on the ceiling. A custom floating walnut console table offers two drawers for private storage and ample space to toss keys and mail, while hooks offer a landing place for coats and hats. Mirrors above and below the console integrate it into the space and offer the perfect spot for one last look before heading out the door.
Around the corner, the apartment opens onto what our clients call their “morning lounge”. DGI designed a custom desk, matching the existing kitchen design onto the opposite wall to extend the open kitchen shelving within a small workspace. The back wall is wrapped in a gorgeous wallpaper mural featuring large swaths of blues, rusty oranges, and deep eggplant. A Saarinen womb chair next to the gallery wall is the ideal spot for morning coffee with a book.
The existing kitchen was beautifully designed but needed a few updates to flow perfectly with the rest of the DGI-designed spaces. Upgrading the island pendants dramatically amped the drama in the space, and the addition of rusty orange velvet island counter stools carries through the earth tones from the rest of the apartment.
The open layout of the dining room and living room offers the perfect space for entertaining or taking in beautiful city views (when Chicago weather cooperates). Drawing the drapery closed offers a cozy, private cocoon, effectively shutting out the hustle and bustle below should relaxation be in order.
The dining room is a true showstopper, featuring a custom walnut dining table that anchors the space. The chairs are velvet, this time in a darker neutral taupe so as not to compete with the dining table. Above, the organic chandelier draws inspiration from the Heracleum plant, creating a bit of interplay between the technical and natural structure. Below, a cream and beige wool rug evokes the same linear elements of the fixture above. The patinated metal sideboard offers a bit of grit and texture, which is softened with the organic-shaped vases and preserved pampas grass.
Taking cozy and inviting to the next level, the living room is anchored with a beautiful, creamy beige sectional, perfect for long movie nights. The TV is surrounded by custom built-ins, in which two-toned stained walnut blends beautifully with cream textured wallpaper behind the TV, softening this utilitarian space. The integrated LEDs highlight decorative elements and offer ambient lighting, further softening the space.
A pair of swivel lounge chairs in beautiful toffee leather completes the seating area, while the pair of boucle ottomans offer a flexible zone to touch down or put your feet up. A basketweave pattern in the wool area rug brings in the linear elements from the rest of the space.
Prioritizing a good night’s sleep is easy in the primary bedroom. Motorized blackout drapes keep the sparkling city lights out when it’s time to sleep. The beautiful king bed is wrapped in a leather and graphite woven fabric headboard. The bed wall is covered in a beautifully intricate striated wallpaper, offering cozy texture and movement repeated in mink wool rug, ensuring softness underfoot every morning. A statement chandelier over the bed amps up the interest and drama. The reading chair in the corner carries in the softness of the living room, pairing beautifully with the matching built-ins. Additional closed storage here provides ample space for linens, clothes, and more.
The home office makes a statement in the other wing of the apartment with a custom desk and shelving unit made of the same stained walnut from the built-ins in the living room and bedroom. Hidden storage below offers hiding spaces for office essentials like printers and scanners, while open shelving is perfect for books, family photos, and more.
To round out the drama, DGI opted to go bold in the powder room. A dark metallic wallpaper covers the room, making a big statement. The dark mood reaches a stunning peak thanks to the statement sconces that provide a sultry glow.
