Guide To Window Treatments

Let’s talk about window treatments. They’re sometimes overlooked, but they’re so important for privacy, light control, and more! They also make a bigger impact on your space than they’re given credit for. These days, there is an endless amount of options in the market for custom window treatments, and it can be overwhelming to choose from. But you’re in luck because we’ve pulled together DGI’s top 6 tips that explain everything you need to know about window treatments. (and of course, we’ve included lots of photos for inspiration!)

1. Blackout Drapery

When you want total blackout, go for blackout-lined drapes and install floor to ceiling, wall to wall. This ensures light leak is kept to a minimum. The best way to achieve this, is to get custom-made drapes for your space, and opt for a ceiling-mounted track.

2. Inside-Mount Shades

Whenever possible, "inside-mount" Roman shades or Roller shades for the most seamless, integrated look. In order to do this, you need at least 3 1/2" deep clear in front of the glass so that the hardware can secure properly.

3. think ahead

Think about window treatments when planning your space. Drapery stacks are typically about 1/3 the total width and will cover part of your window if you don't plan accordingly and carry the track or rod past the window.

4. Go higher and wider

Always mount drapes as high as possible and as wide as possible. This tricks the eye and makes the windows seem even bigger, and it minimizes light blocking when drapes are open.

5. invest in key areas

Invest in custom window treatments for key areas. Custom window treatments are a big line item, but make a huge impact on not only the aesthetic of your home, but also the functionality. Window treatments provide privacy, light control and soften the aesthetic and acoustics of your space. They can also help protect furnishings and finishes from sun damage over time.

6. City living Window Treatments

For city living, think about privacy and light control separately. We often provide privacy control with roller shades or sheer drapes so that home owners can shield themselves a bit from passersby while also allowing in as much light as possible. In bedrooms, we'll often layer blackout drapes on top of this, so they can achieve privacy during the day with the first layer, and block out light while sleeping with the blackout drapes.

That completes our top six tips for window treatments. We hope these tips and inspiration images can guide you on your search for the perfect window treatments!
