INTRODUCING: Chromatic crib
When a young family decided to purchase a large single-family home in Chicago in 2023, they saw beyond the dated interiors and furnishings of the 2012-built house. The five-bedroom property, spacious enough to accommodate their growing needs, provided a perfect canvas for their dream home. With a clear vision, they sought DGI’s expertise to convert their drab residence into a vibrant jewel box that reflects their passion for color, design, and art.
The family's primary goal was to transform their new home into a stylish and functional space that caters to their lifestyle and interests. As avid art collectors, they wanted each room to highlight their collection, using color and art as the main design elements. The redesign also aimed to provide practical solutions for their work-from-home needs, create a fun and engaging environment for their children, and establish an inviting space for entertaining guests.
THE ENTRYWAY & LIVING ROOM
The journey into this luxurious home begins at the entryway, where first impressions are made. Our design team focused on creating a dramatic and inviting entrance that sets the tone for the rest of the house. We selected a bold yet elegant color palette that complements the family's art collection, incorporating rich textures and materials to add depth and character. The bronzed mirror and bold wallpaper serve as a functional art piece.
The formal living room is where the family can relax and entertain guests. We opted for gallery-white walls and a white (but not boring) sofa to introduce the family's art collection immediately. Two armchairs add color, while the space above the fireplace houses a painting, not a television. The walls were adorned with a curated selection of the family's favorite artworks, creating a gallery-like ambiance that sparks conversation and admiration. Added materials like a marble coffee and side table, and custom upholstery on throw pillows add luxe details and drama to the space. Throughout the first floor’s open concept, the architectural beams will receive a fresh coat of paint to update and modernize them.
THE DINING ROOM
The dining room is designed to be a sophisticated space for family meals and dinner parties. Sitting in the middle of the first floor, we wanted to play with scale. A custom-designed dining table, surrounded by elegant chairs, forms the room's centerpiece, while three draped strands of faceted crystal lights hang above as the stunning chandelier. Since the dining room is opposite the main stairwell and the other wall houses windows and a bar, the chandelier and dining table are art pieces in this space. We also added a gallery wall to the stairwell, visible from the dining room so the family can see their portraits while they dine.
FAMILY ROOM
Between the kitchen and dining room, the family room serves as a casual gathering space for the family. This room is in great shape, and we love the existing built-ins that are already in a color that works within our palette, so we’re sticking to accessorizing the space here.
THE KITCHEN
The existing kitchen has plenty of space and functions well for the family, so we didn’t want to change anything too drastically. We’ll add cabinetry above the refrigerator and the stove wall to house a built-in coffee machine. Both the new and existing cabinetry will receive a fresh coat of paint. New pendant lights over the island will update the space. Pops of color create a throughline to the rest of the home in the barstools and rug.
PRIMARY & KIDS’ BEDROOMS
Each bedroom was transformed into a personal retreat. The primary bedroom features a soothing color palette, luxurious bedding, and bespoke furniture. The children's bedrooms are playful and imaginative, with vibrant colors and creative storage solutions designed to grow with the child. Every room is a unique expression of its occupant's tastes and preferences.
THE REC ROOM & CHAMPAGNE WALL
The basement received a complete makeover, making it a multi-functional space for adults. One section houses a state-of-the-art golf simulator, providing endless entertainment during Chicago's long winters. Adjacent to it is a handsome bar area, perfect for hosting friends and family. To add a touch of elegance, we created a beautiful champagne wall below the basement stairs, showcasing the family's collection in a visually stunning display. Through the glass doors, a home gym ensures the family’s dedication to their wellness journey stays intact.
HIS & HERS: HOME OFFICES
With both parents working from home, dedicated office spaces were a necessity. Each office was designed to reflect the individual's personality and work style. We incorporated beautiful furniture, ample storage solutions to leverage existing built-ins, and inspiring décor elements to create environments that promote productivity.
KIDS’ LOUNGE
The space above the garage is currently underutilized. With some funky paint and kid-friendly performance fabrics, the kids have their own space to hang out with their friends separate from the main part of the house, providing the adults with some well-deserved quiet time.
