Introducing: Heritage Homestead Barn & Home

Every so often, a one-of-a-kind design prompt comes across our desks and when these clients reached out for us to design this epic party-barn, we could not get our hands on it fast enough.

Built to feel like it’s been there for a century, the barn blends rustic charm with natural materials like warm woods, enduring stone, and classic black hardware. Radiant heated floors run throughout, while the neutral construction allows vintage furniture and personal touches—like a focal-point American flag on a pulley system that can be swapped for a disco ball—to bring in color and character. Every detail was chosen to avoid anything that felt too new, creating a space that feels nostalgic from the start.

Kitchen

Designed with entertaining and functionality in mind, the kitchen is a large, commercial-style space. Outfitted with a five-foot range, a massive island, and a four-foot sink with double faucets, making it perfect for occasional chefs or catering teams. Rustic cabinetry, reclaimed wood paneling on the ceiling, and dark granite countertops bring warmth and texture, while a full metal backsplash seamlessly blends into the custom metal hood. A 30-inch beverage fridge and cleverly integrated sliding panels allow the space to be open or closed off as needed, balancing utility with thoughtful design.

Pantry & Scullery

Tucked just behind the kitchen, the scullery acts as a fully functional secondary kitchen—complete with its own sink, ample storage, and prep space to keep the main area clutter-free. The adjoining pantry features open shelving, extra counter space, and a window that brings in natural light, all tied together by a continuation of the metal backsplash for a cohesive, utilitarian feel.

Powder Room

Full of charm and personality, the powder room is wrapped in reclaimed wood paneling from floor to ceiling, complete with built-in shelves for added detail. A vintage “Thomas Crapper”  toilet from England, mosaic tile floors with black accents, and an exposed sink basin with double faucets set the tone, while an oversized tilted mirror and antique lighting finish the charming look. It’s a bold, inviting space that feels both collected and intentional.

Great Room

Anchored by a grand stone fireplace and flanked by oversized sliding doors that open to the outdoors, the great room blends rustic warmth with thoughtful, functional design. Reclaimed wood paneling and beams, metal-detailed shelving, and a vintage American flag create a sense of heritage, while a discreet elevator lift—styled with an old motor to look vintage—ensures accessibility. From 10-foot reclaimed doors to a basement laundry chute and curated vintage décor, every element tells a story and serves a purpose.

Note - Furnishing Phase comes next, so for now renderings only represent construction design decisions.

Bedroom + Bathroom #3, #4

Located upstairs, Bedrooms 3 and 4 are mirror images of each other, each featuring wall-to-wall built-ins with integrated nightstand storage and angled ceilings clad in reclaimed wood. Their adjoining bathrooms follow suit—similar in layout but unique in tone—with walk-in showers, full-length niches, and natural, neutral materials that complement the character of each space. One leans lighter and airier, while the other embraces a moodier palette, both tied together by angled ceilings and thoughtful use of reclaimed elements.

Hallway + Linen Storage, Laundry Room, Powder Room

Descending from the great room, the lower level hallway is wrapped in reclaimed wood with exposed beams and plaster-finished ceilings. The laundry room is designed with utility in mind—featuring a double washer and dryer setup, farmhouse utility sink, black-stained doors, concrete floors, and plenty of hooks for easy everyday use. Tucked nearby, the powder room is simple yet striking, with shelving above the toilet, a concrete vessel sink, and rustic stonework that echoes the fireplace above.

Bedroom + Bathroom #1, #2

On the lower level, Bedroom 1 is a playful bunk room with custom designed loft-style bunks beds. When not in use, the twin size loft beds appear to be a wooden panel above two queen beds. Integrated sneakily into the bookshelves on either side of the beds, ladder rungs allow access to the upper level which flips down and cantilevers above the beds when additional sleeping space is needed. Its attached bathroom keeps the look fun and neutral with a mix of black and cream tile, a vintage double faucet sink, a tub/shower combo, and reclaimed barn wood on the ceiling. Bedroom 2, designed with accessibility in mind, skips the built-ins in favor of open shelving. The adjoining bathroom features a curbless walk-in shower, ADA-friendly fixtures, and reclaimed wood accents for a seamless blend of comfort and character.

Heritage Homestead Home

On the same property as this party-barn, is the client’s own home which needs an update to feel cohesive with the new accessory building. While the original home embraces a timeless, rustic charm, the newly added wing brings a more modern, streamlined sensibility to DGI Heritage Homestead. Designed to flow seamlessly with the existing structure, the addition carries over key architectural elements—like wood paneling and rich materiality—while introducing updated wood flooring, sleek new doors reminiscent of the barn, and a fresh coat of paint throughout. The result is a thoughtful evolution of the home’s character, blending heritage and contemporary style in a way that feels completely cohesive.

Laundry Room + Pool Bath

Serving as a functional hub, the laundry room connects the new and old parts of the home, with paneling and wainscoting that unify the spaces. Equipped with a wet bar, sink, ice maker, and stackable washer/dryer, it also features herringbone tile flooring for a vintage touch. Just adjacent, the pool bath is designed for quick post-swim showers, with rustic wood vanity, mosaic tile accents, and zellige tiles that offer an organic, handcrafted appeal. The space is tied together with the same sconce lighting as the kitchen island pendants, blending practicality and style seamlessly.

Annex (and Sauna):

Referred to as "the showstopper," the annex offers a striking view of the pool from the driveway through its floor-to-ceiling glass walls. A stunning light fixture, long envisioned by the client, sets the tone for the space, while plaster details add texture and warmth. The reclaimed barn wood ceiling is illuminated by carefully chosen sconces, as the space forgoes can lights. Through the doors, a hidden sauna is discreetly concealed behind a shingled door, seamlessly blending into the wall to offer both privacy and luxury.

Mudroom

A practical yet stylish space, the mudroom features floor-to-ceiling cabinet storage, perfect for keeping things organized. The walls are wrapped in smooth plaster, while the ceiling showcases reclaimed wood, adding warmth and character to this functional area.

Study

This study and lounge area feels like an escape into nature, with walls of windows surrounding the space. A large sectional faces a TV, while a built-in desk nestled in the corner is framed by a wall of bookcases. Contemporary light fixtures, including an oversized statement piece in the center, complete the room, blending modern style with natural serenity.

Powder Room

The powder room features mosaic tile flooring with black accents, echoing the same tile as the barn’s powder room, but in a different pattern to tie the two together. Fun patchwork burlap wallpaper adds texture, while a contemporary farmhouse light fixture and barn wood ceiling bring warmth and charm. A black toilet completes the space, enhancing its rustic-modern feel.

Primary Bedroom, Bathroom, Closet:

The primary bedroom is designed to feel like a serene retreat in the forest, with walls of windows and cozy barn wood accents. A floating wood stove in the corner adds warmth, while dramatic, adjustable reading lights create a hotel-like atmosphere. The bathroom boasts floor-to-ceiling windows framing views from the black tub, with plaster walls, zellige tile, and rustic concrete countertops offering a blend of industrial and natural elements. The walk-through closet is both functional and beautiful, with ample storage and thoughtful design to enhance the overall space.
