At DGI Design x Build, we love a transformation that celebrates the past while embracing the clean, refined touches of today. #DGIHoweWeDoIt reimagines a grand, transitional home, blending modern minimalism with luxurious details, from unique lighting elements to thoughtfully selected materials. Let's take a look at the vision behind the design, with each room crafted to feel cohesive, functional, and effortlessly elegant.
VISION & INSPIRATION
The original space was ornate, traditional, and rich with architectural character. Our goal was to honor these “good bones” while giving the home a clean, serene ambiance and a major refresh. Throughout, we chose cooler neutrals—crisp whites, blacks, and gentle greys—to create a light, airy atmosphere. Elegant touches, like glamorous light fixtures, elevate the feel of each room while maintaining subtlety and cohesion.
Lighting was a core focus: each space now features a distinctive light fixture, from dramatic chandeliers to refined sconces, adding layers of depth and personality. Our guiding principle was a careful balance of old and new—preserving traditional elements like the trim details throughout and doors, while simplifying and modernizing to create a seamless, sophisticated flow and a more minimal aesthetic.
ENTRYWAY & LIVING ROOM
The home’s transformation begins in the foyer, where a striking black-and-white marble tile sets a refined tone. A new chandelier and sleek metal railing bring a modern update, while preserved traditional trims add subtle, transitional charm. Moving into the living room, bright white walls open the space, making it feel airy and inviting. The simple stone fireplace, accented by twin sconces, becomes an understated focal point, radiating warmth and elegance and providing a curated space for some statement artwork. Herringbone white oak flooring starting here and continuing through the first floor adds rich texture, creating a seamless flow that beautifully marries classic and contemporary design.
DINING ROOM & STAIRCASE
The herringbone floors flow seamlessly into the dining area, complemented by a chandelier that adds a hint of glamour. The staircase becomes a bold centerpiece with its black stain, metal railings, and white risers, while a charcoal carpet runner brings added texture. Soft grasscloth wallpaper extends all the way up to the third floor, creating a gentle, textured focal point that ties the space together beautifully.
POWDER ROOM & ELEVATOR
This floor required a significant layout change in order to incorporate an elevator cutting throughout the house. In order to achieve this, we needed to shift the powder room and float it between circulation paths to the kitchen.
In the reimagined powder room, we maximized space with a wall-mounted toilet and custom, offset mirror with a floating vanity in white oak, polished nickel finishes, and a textured porcelain tile.
The elevator—a major addition—is tucked seamlessly between the kitchen and dining room, bringing convenience and modernity to this timeless home.
KITCHEN & FAMILY ROOM
This stunning kitchen is a functional work of art. We created a massive island with dual sides for cooking and entertaining, and installed a contrasting dark-stained oak wet bar with black metal framed cabinets. Finishes include white micro-style shaker cabinets, a porcelain slab backsplash, and durable, quartz countertops. The wet bar’s granite countertop and leathered stone add subtle sophistication and visual contrast.
Adjacent to the kitchen, the family room features a refreshed fireplace in white Carrara stone, a new chandelier, and a TV. We balanced the room’s traditional millwork with updated finishes to create a cozy, modern gathering space.
PRIMARY BEDROOM
The primary suite exudes serenity with walls and doors painted in a cohesive white to highlight the fireplace, now a seamless floor-level feature with gray veining for added texture. Above, a polished nickel light fixture with floral elements brings a touch of femininity.
PRIMARY BATHROOM
The biggest transformation, the primary bathroom now features pocket doors to clean up circulation spaces, a free-standing tub framed by a stone feature wall, and a sparkling nickel chandelier. The expanded shower includes a glass enclosure, dual showerheads, and textured walls for a spa-like feel. Each vanity boasts custom mirrors, integrated power stations, and elegant LED toekick lighting, proving that thoughtful details make all the difference.
PRIMARY CLOSET
The primary closet got a huge layout change by opening up all the reach in doors and creating a “walk-through” closet, designed to feel like an elegant, organized foyer leading to the bedroom. With painted cabinetry blending into the walls, a functional island, and tons of hidden storage, the closet combines style and function effortlessly. Two sliding glass doors with integrated lighting add an extra layer of luxury, perfect for showcasing accessories. A hidden access panel for storing suitcases behind the island maximizes the space, making every inch of the closet both practical and refined.
REC ROOM & BATHROOM
The rec room is crafted for a moody yet sunlit ambiance, featuring a full wet bar with durable porcelain countertops and a backsplash that extends up to the shelf, creating an elevated look ideal for entertaining. Updated railings connect the room’s design to the rest of the home, adding cohesion and style. Meanwhile, the hall bath is refreshed with unique tile details that run up the walls, a tapered backsplash, and sleek chrome accents for a modern finish. A new glass enclosure replaces the shower curtain, enhancing the bathroom's airy, sophisticated aesthetic.
From the reconfigured layout to the carefully chosen details, #DGIHoweWeDoIt will be an exciting transformation. The spacious, open feel achieved in the kitchen and primary bedroom enhances the home’s livability, while the new floors and brighter palette infuse fresh, lively energy throughout. The kitchen, primary closet, and primary bath will serve as true “wow-factors,” redefining how every inch of this residence is utilized and enjoyed.
