Modern Farmhouse Project
I absolutely love when clients have a special focal point that they want to focus a project on. This particular family reached out about a family room and mudroom addition that they were working on for their home. They were building out a back deck and adding on a mudroom leading into their open concept family room and kitchen. The client wanted to create a space that was cohesive with the sophisticated, modern front half of the house with a subtle modern farmhouse twist to add a casual element to the space. The added challenge: incorporate the great-grandfather’s antique cash register (weighing several hundred pounds). Challenge accepted!
To start, we incorporated bright white built-ins for the mudroom with a reclaimed wood (from a Wisconsin barn) backing to add some texture and warmth. Each family member get’s their own cubby space with room for shoes below the bench and a basket above their coats. Along the side wall, we incorporated a blue glazed brick tile, installed in a herringbone pattern to tie in with backsplash in their existing kitchen. Beneath the countertop, we built out a custom dog gate by Icon Modern for their two little french bulldogs to sleep in.
Moving into the family room, we pulled in a huge corner sectional from Lee Industries upholstered with a denim-look fabric to suggest a more casual atmosphere. We loaded the sectional with textural throw pillows to add some playfulness. To round out the seating, we included some cane accent chairs and hand-knit poufs in front of the fireplace. Grounding everything together is a cast-concrete coffee table to tie in with the concrete-look tiles on the mudroom floor.
At the back wall, we’ve opened up the family room to the new deck with modern black french doors, matching the single entryway to the mudroom from the deck. Between the doors and the mudroom entryway, we brought in a large tapestry by Lauren Williams, adding a some texture and intrigue to the back wall, which can be seen through the entire first floor.
Most importantly, along the side wall, we created a custom built-in with Ganas Manufacturing, reinforced with steel supports to showcase the family cash register. The reclaimed wood top mimics the wood incorporated in the mudroom built-ins while the black steel supports allude to the doors. Vintage cabinet pulls tie into the delicate curves and sculptural forms of the register, creating a larger unit altogether. Behind the built-in, we installed a hand-painted wallcovering by Vahallan, reminiscent of a wall stripped of tiles. Reclaimed wood floating shelves provide space for the family to display photos and other significant pieces.
In the front of the house, we worked with some existing pieces and helped the client’s complete their living room after removing the dining table. We replaced the table and chandelier with a credenza and pendant lights to create a bar area for entertaining. In the living room, we pulled in sculptural accent chairs that tied in with the existing color palette will alluding to the silhouettes of the chairs in the family room.
Lastly, in the butler’s pantry, we installed a geometric accent tile by Ann Sacks to add some interest and speak to the angular herringbone patterns in the kitchen and mudroom.
We are thrilled with how this project came together and love that we finally have some modern farmhouse in our portfolio! We always love bringing a client’s own style to life and creating a space that truly reflects those who live in it.
