Refresh Your Home for the New year

Something about a new year beginning always seems to spark motivation and intentions and that doesn’t need to just include working out more, eating better and drinking less. The new year is also a great time to refresh your home to get the space organized and ready for the year ahead. This week, we’re rounding up some of our favorite tips to refresh your home for the new year and some accessories to help you do so. TIDY UP

When the temperatures drop, inevitably, we spend more time at home, and if it’s messy, dirty or cluttered, that can add stress to your life. Getting organized, and finally dedicating a space for everything, is the easiest way to set yourself up for a clean, peaceful home. If you’ve been putting it off, now’s the time to take inventory of what you have, and buy organizational tools to help tidy up. Here are a few of our favorites for organization.

We recently put these wire baskets in our coat closet to store hats, gloves and scarves for easy access and visibility.

Organization is all about containing. These white bins are perfect for organizing kid’s toys, craft and art supplies, beauty supplies, cleaning supplies, you name it.

Adding drawer dividers to your wardrobe is the perfect way to keep everything in it’s place and maintain an organized system throughout the year.

We added a lazy susan inside our appliance garage for easy access to oils, vinegars, and any other bottles that often don’t fit in an upper cabinet.

Clear bins are the perfect way to categorize and contain foods and supplies in your pantry and refrigerator.

A rolling cart is the perfect place to store cleaning supplies so you can easily drag it behind you as you clean the house and have everything accessible.

Small decisions that benefit the planet add up overtime. I love these cleaning supply kits from Blueland because they all match and have a beautiful aesthetic, but also because they ship without water, reducing the amount of energy required for transportation and they’re able to be refilled with the drop of a tablet mixed with water.

REDECORATE AND GET COZY

Once holiday decor comes down, it can be nice to swap out some accessories around your home to freshen up the look. Some of our favorite ways to do this are with new pillow covers, candles for cozy evenings, new vase fillers or dried botanicals and throw blankets to curl up and watch a movie with.

It’s always a good idea to mix in some neutral, textural throw pillows in with some patterns to help balance the palette out.

A classic Buffalo check pattern is a casual, fun pattern and feels fresh at any time of year.

Warm brown and rust tones add a natural, earthy feel to a space.

In the winter, I often opt for candles with warm and cozy scents as opposed to floral. This Diptyque Wood Fire Candle is the perfect companion for a cold night staying inside.

Dried botanicals are one of my favorite ways to fill a vase. You don’t have to worry about keeping them alive, yet they add a natural touch to the space.

A pop of greenery always freshens up a space.

We bought this blanket a year ago and race each other to the sofa every night to claim it. It’s oversized (so it can be shared, if you’re feeling generous) and it’s the perfect level of fluff to curl up in by a fire in the fireplace.

DETOXIFY

Indoor air is known to be more toxic than outdoor air. In the winter, when we aren’t able to open windows up as much, it’s important to focus on keeping your air quality in mind. Bringing more plants inside is a great way to naturally filter the air. It’s also vital for your wooden floors and furniture, to keep humidity levels above 40%.

There is no such thing as too many plants. Choose planters with a saucer so you don’t have to worry about overwatering or damaging your furniture.

Low-maintenance plants are especially good to have in the winter, when light levels are low and growth slows down.

Let’s be honest, it’s hard to find a humidifier that isn’t an eye-sore, but Dyson has done a pretty wonderful job. This helps keep humidity levels at a safe level for wood floors and furniture during the harsh winters, and double as a fan and air purifier.

I hope these tips are helpful as you gear up for a wonderful new year!
